Zuza Homem de Mello

Musicologist, journalist and musical producer born in 1933 in San Pablo, Brazil. Homem de Mello took his first steps in the musical journalism in 1956 with his weekly column in the newspaper Folha da Noite. He studied musicology at New York’s Juilliard School of Music. He was a radio producer and announcer and a popular music critic for O Estado de São Paulo, and coordinated the edition of an encyclopaedia on Brazilian music. He was also member of the jury, artistic director and producer of the main music festivals. Homem de Mello is still giving lectures and courses on Brazilian popular music in his country and abroad, and is currently a curator at San Pablo Jazz Festival, most probably the greatest of the jazz events in the entire Latin America. He has published the books Música popular brasileira cantada e contada (1976), A canção no tempo (co-written withJairo Severiano, 1997-98), João Gilberto (2001), A Era dos Festivais (2003), Música nas veias (2007) and Eis aqui os Bossa Nova (2008).
